“Visually and audibly invigorating” – American Idiot Wows Audiences in First Weekend

Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT opened on Nov 16th at UB’s Center for the Arts, Drama Stage. The high- energy performance left audiences invigorated and excited by an impressive set of high-energy routines, edgy costume, light and set design, and an extremely talented cast of UB Students. In its opening weekend, the production received a strong review from Buffalo Theatre Guide, in which reviewer Mary Best stated “the show is visually and audibly invigorating.” (source)

The University at Buffalo Department of Theatre & Dance opened its production of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT on Thursday, November 16. AMERICAN IDIOT is a gripping and gritty coming of age story told in the form of a dynamic rock opera. AMERICAN IDIOT follows the story three childhood friends, Johnny (Bobby MacDonell), Will (Joe Wood) and Tunny (Holden Bath), on a search for purpose in a post 9/11 world. From the suburbs to the city, the friends navigate their early twenties relying on the punk rock music of Green Day to express their experiences.

Best had this to say about the actors:

“MacDonell, Wood and Bath are a strong trio. MacDonell has some strong moments, especially during “When It’s Time” and when battling the demons of his addictions.  Bath is arguably the stronger actor, especially as his character experiences the costs of war, but Wood knocks it out of the park with a strong voice despite singing a chunk of his lines upside down on the couch.

William Hin plays St. Jimmy, Johnny’s manifested drug-dealing alter ego, and does so brilliantly. He’s wild, untamed and out of control, donning a mohawk, edgy makeup, and combat boots to fly around the stage and flawlessly belt out his songs.”

Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT features music by Green Day, lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer. The show premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009 before opening on Broadway in April 2010. In 2010, AMERICAN IDIOT won two Tony Awards and the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. Since then, the show has continued to play worldwide.
