Announcing the UB Theatre and Dance 2019-2020 Season

 

Buffalo, NY (June 20, 2019) – Join the University at Buffalo Department of Theatre and Dance for a season of broadway musicals, plays and dance – where nationally recognized directors and choreographers work with emerging talent from UB to bring the public original productions with brand new designs, to entertain and to explore the human condition.

The full season of 13 productions will take place at two primary Amherst NY venues: UB Center for the Arts on the UB North Campus in Amherst, and also at the beautiful Katharine Cornell Theatre within the Ellicott Housing Complex on UB’s North Campus. (More info and directions below.)

2019-2020 UB DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE AT UB CENTER FOR THE ARTS:

Highlights include Professor Vincent O’Neill, of Buffalo’s Irish Classical Theatre Company, directing the classic play, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Additionally, guest Director Keith Andrews,  director of the National Tours of The Full Monty and Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh, joins us as director/choreographer for the “perfect musical comedy” Guys and Dolls.

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who The New York Times calls “one of this country’s most original and illuminating writers,” has authored Everybody, directed by UB Professor Lindsay Hunter. Zodiaque Dance Company, under the direction of faculty members Kerry Ring and Jenna Del Monte, welcomes guest choreographers Ali Dietz, of Entity Contemporary Dance, plus Danielle Sheather and Bill Thomas, among others, to its 46th season.

Now entering its 46th season, Zodiaque Dance Company (ZDC) is one of the longest-running student dance companies in the nation, comprised of exceptional UB dance majors, and with choreography by esteemed faculty and international professional guest artists. This fall ZDC will present a dance experience that explores various styles of movement and asks the question, “What is Dance?” Dances designed to entertain, excite, and integrate the arts through movement, audience members will make connections to various dance styles, popular American dance forms, and interpretive expressions of modern dance. Originally starring Vanessa Redgrave live in London in 1966, and further popularized by legendary British actress Maggie Smith in the 1969 British film, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is about an uninhibited teacher at a 1930s girls’s school in Edinburgh, Scotland. Miss Brodie, determined that her students should receive an education in the most visceral way, provides them with lessons about love, life, travel, and art, amid the perils of rising European fascism. Directed by Irish Classic Theatre co-founder and UB Associate Theatre Professor Vincent O’Neill.

Set in Depression-era Times Square, Guys and Dolls is the 1955 musical about a couple of hot shot, big city gamblers and the women who love them. It features classic, enduring songs like “Luck Be a Lady” and the title track, further popularized by Frank Sinatra on subsequent studio recordings. Guest Director/Choreographer Keith Andrews has directed and choreographed musicals and plays throughout the United States, including the national tours of “The Full Monty” and “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh.”

At the Katharine Cornell Theatre, UB Theatre and Dance shines a light on new voices, student directors and innovative performance. We kick off with a student-directed play that welcomes the whole family – Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat, directed by Jill Anderson. The season continues with dance, up close and personal in the unique L-shaped venue, with dynamic concerts lead by faculty members Joyce Lichtenberger and Trebien Pollard, and our inaugural MFA Thesis Concert. Please note that ticket information for all events at the Katharine Cornell Theatre will be published at a later date.

First published in 1957 by Theodor Geisel under his pen name Dr. Suess, the beloved book comes to life in this new production for young children and families, directed by Jill Anderson. Get transported into Dr. Suess’s fun, mystical world of mischief and intrigue when the tall, red-and-white-striped cat appears at the door of Sally and her brother. With the trickiest of tricks and the craziest of ideas, he’s loads of fun, turning a rainy afternoon into an amazing adventure. But what will mom find when she gets home?

As Robert blows out the candles on the cake celebrating his 35th birthday, he struggles to think of a wish as he contemplates his bachelor lifestyle. Through a series of events including dinners, drinks, and even a wedding, Robert’s friends, all in committed relationships, offer guidance to the habitually single man. Through a hilarious array of interactions, highlighting the pros and cons of spousal commitment, Robert is forced to question his obdurate bachelordom.
