TH&D Spotlight: Darryl Semira and Chris Avery take the stage in EQUIVOCATION
TH&D Spotlight: Darryl Semira (MA, 2020) & Chris Avery (MA, 2019) take the stage at the Kavinoky Theatre for the second weekend of EQUIVOCATION, directed by Katie Mallinson.
We touched base with Darryl Semira, who is playing a total of eleven different roles in this production, some historical, some fictional. “I play Robert Armin (one of Shakespeare’s lead comedic actors), Robert Catesby (instigator of the Gunpowder Plot), Sir Edward Coke (main prosecutor of the Powder Plot conspirators), the Fool from King Lear, the Porter, Lady Macbeth, Witch and Seton from Macbeth.” Said Semira.
According to Semira, this production is an opportunity for audiences to experience Shakespeare and one of his great works from a different angle. “This play is truly a romp in a fantastical world of historical fiction,” said Semira, “playing the game of “what if” with the audience. There are several plays within the play as well, so this is also an homage to theatre itself.”
Performances for this four week engagement (April 26th-May 19th) will take place on Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 3:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. The gala opening night performance will be held on Friday, April 26th at 7:30 p.m. and includes a catered wine reception with the cast following the performance. About the Show:
The Kavinoky Theatre, a professional theatre on the campus of D’Youville, closes its 39th season with Equivocation by Bill Cain.
William Shakespeare is commissioned by Sir Robert Cecil, the most powerful man in England, to write the true history of the Gunpowder Plot — a failed attempt to kill King James I. But as “Shag” and his actors rehearse their new play, they suspect the government’s version might be a product of “alternative facts.” Now, the greatest writer of all time must decide between writing a lie and losing his soul, or writing the truth and losing his head. A high-stakes political thriller with contemporary resonances, EQUIVOCATION gallops from the great Globe to the Tower of London to the halls of Parliament.
Director Katie Mallinson has assembled a cast of some of Buffalo’s finest actors which includes Guy Balotine as Shakespeare, Arianne Davidow as his daughter Judith as well as Christoper Avery, Christopher Guilmet, Adriano Gatto and Darryl Semira.
