Opportunities for students interested in creative arts therapy are available through Moving Miracles. This credit-bearing internship is a hands-on experience with a dance/movement program for children, adolescents and adults who are exceptionally challenged mentally, physically and/or emotionally.

National Dance Education Organization – NDEO
The National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the advancement and promotion of high quality education in the art of dance. Many UB dance faculty are involved in NDEO as board members for the state affiliate (NYSDEA), conference presenters and participants in state and local dance advocacy. The Society of Dance History Scholars – SDHS
The Society of Dance History Scholars advances the field of dance studies through research, publication, performance, and outreach to audiences across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The University at Buffalo’s Department of Theatre & Dance and Jon Lehrer, Artistic Director ofLehrerDance have formed a partnership between the UB dance program and the Buffalo-based professional dance company. This unique collaboration brings together higher education and the professional world of concert dance, with benefits that serve both groups.
UB Dance and LehrerDance interface by sharing unique artistic resources. UB Dance majors have the opportunity to take weekly classes in the LehrerDance technique, and Lehrer sets a choreographic work on the University’s Zodiaque Dance Company and Ensemble Company. Additionally, an observership is awarded to two senior dance majors, affording them the opportunity to learn company repertoire while gaining valuable insight into the professional world of dance.
In turn, the LehrerDance Company rehearses in the UB dance studios during academic calendar breaks and makes its “summer home” in the Center for the Arts’ spacious dance studios. ACDFA (American College Dance Festival Association)
ACDFA provides an opportunity for college dancers to have their works adjudicated and critiques by established professionals as well as the chance to participate in professional classes, workshops and various performing experiences. This experience provides our students the opportunity to perform outside their own academic setting and be exposed to the diversity of the college dance world in addition to interaction with students from a wide-range of institutions. ACDFA conferences provide regional and national visibility for college-trained choreographer and dancers. Works presented by the UB Dance Program have been invited numerous times to perform in the Gala Concert which concludes the conference – a true honor. The UB Dance Program has also proudly hosted the Northeast Conference three times in the past and hopes to host again in the future. ACDFA exists to support and affirm the role of dance in higher education primarily through the sponsorship of college/university regional conferences and national dance festivals. The University at Buffalo Dance program is a member of the Northeast Regional and been attending regional festivals over the past ten years.

The International Association for Dance Medicine & Science was formed in 1990 by an international group of dance medicine practitioners, dance educators, dance scientists, and dancers. Membership is drawn equally from the medical and dance professions…
The organization has held an annual conference since its inception, drawing several hundred participants each year.
IADMS was formed to foster several related goals in the dance medicine and science field; the purposes and objectives of the organization are summarized in its Mission Statement:
IADMS enhances the health, well-being, training, and performance of dancers by cultivating educational, medical, and scientific excellence.
IADMS has always striven to promote an international network of communication between dance and medicine. To this end, membership and conference participation is recruited internationally from both fields, and a balance of medical and dance professionals is maintained among the officers and Board of Directors.
The Congress on Research in Dance (CORD) provides opportunities for dance professionals from a broad range of specialties to exchange ideas, resources, and methodologies through publication, international and regional conferences, and workshops. We encourage research in all aspects of dance and related fields and promote the accessibility of research materials.
Dance Masters of America (DMA) – Teacher’s Training School (TTS)
Since 1997, the University at Buffalo’s Dance Program has hosted DMA-TTS. Dance educators from both the international private and public sector gather each summer with master teachers for intensive study in all disciplines of dance: Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Contemporary/Lyrical/ Hip Hop and Theatre Dance. Specialty classes include: Children’s Work, Ballroom, Music Theory, Dance Notation, Nutrition, Comparative Body Movement, Dance History, Kinesiology, Choreography, Studio Business, Costume Design and Lighting. The program is highly recommended for the established educator as well as the teacher in training. Certification and membership into DMA is made available through this education program.
Classes are held at the Center for the Arts at the State University at Buffalo. This modern facility, dedicated to the Arts, offers an enhanced learning environment for personal artistic growth.
Dance Masters of America (DMA) – Student Honors Intensive Program (SHIP)
Founded in 2003, for DMA by UB Professor Tom Ralabate, SHIP is a specifically designed for the young serious dance student ages 13 – 18 years old. The yearly five-day summer intensive is an educational journey for young emerging dancers preparing them for the job demands of the 21st century. SHIP consists of daily master classes in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre Dance, Dance Company and Commercial Dance Auditions, Wellness classes, Acting, and Voice. The classroom voyage challenges the dancer’s technical and artistic expression, culminating with a student scholarship banquet and on-stage performance. DMA’s SHIP and TTS programs are held each summer and run sequentially in programming spanning 10-days. For more information contact the DMA web site at: www.dma-national.org
Vision of Sound Concert of Live Music and Dance
The Vision of Sound is a concert series of live music and dance directed in conjunction with choreographer and UB Assistant Professor, Melanie Aceto. The concert works are created through the collaboration of composer, choreographer, dancers and musicians. Choreographer and composer collaborate in the creation of a piece while the musicians and dancers bring it to life. The Vision of Sound provides performance and arts administration opportunities for UB dance majors. From its inception in 2006, Vision of Sound concerts have been presented in Buffalo, Rochester, Brockport, Clinton, Hamilton and Syracuse, NY.
Arts in Healthcare
The Arts in Healthcare initiative is a program established by the Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo to bring the performing and visual arts into healthcare settings at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The UB Dance Faculty and Dance Majors, proudly supports the efforts of this important initiative and contribute by providing workshops, performances and committee work.
